Czero: Reducing Viral Infections with Innovative Wearable Technology

Revolutionary Design to Mitigate the Spread of Infections

Covid-19 and influenza viruses pose a significant threat due to their rapid transmission rates, especially in the absence of vaccinations or cures. While handwashing has been encouraged, studies show that 80% of infections spread through face-touching. Introducing Czero, a groundbreaking prevention tool designed for travelers, aimed at reducing overseas transmission and potentially preventing pandemics from becoming endemic.

Czero is a wearable device that vibrates when the user's hand is near their face, serving as a constant reminder not to touch it and significantly reducing the transmission of infections. This innovative ring is linked to a user-friendly app that not only tracks the user's health but also provides alerts to wash hands before deactivating the vibration.

The technology behind Czero is both sophisticated and practical. The ring contains a transmitter, receiver, vibrator, Photoplethysmography sensor (PPG), Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) sensor, Arduino, and battery. Additionally, the earring or pendant transmits and receives information wirelessly to the ring. When the ring and accessory are in close proximity, the vibrator in the ring is activated, reminding the user to refrain from touching their face. The PPG sensor tracks blood flow under the skin, while body temperature is monitored through the NTC sensor. The Arduino and transmitter send this information to the app, providing real-time data to the user.

One of the key strengths of Czero is its discreet and aesthetically pleasing design, which is rarely seen in healthcare products. The ring and accessories are small, blending seamlessly into the user's everyday life. By breaking the dangerous habit of face-touching, Czero not only helps prevent the spread of infections but also serves as a constant reminder of the user's health status. The device can alert users when they may have contracted an infection, allowing for early intervention and isolation, thus mitigating the spread of contagious illnesses.

Developed by Sophia Neill, a third-year Industrial Design student at Victoria University of Wellington, Czero was conceived during the Covid-19 lockdown period in New Zealand. Sophia's research into the root causes of the pandemic and the increasing threat of influenza led her to design an affordable product with a large target audience, primarily focused on travelers.

Czero addresses the challenge of reducing face-touching, which accounts for 80% of infection transmission. By removing this interaction, Czero provides a practical solution to mitigate the spread of contagious diseases. With its innovative technology and user-friendly design, Czero has the potential to significantly impact global health and safety.

Recognized for its excellence, Czero was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Wearable Technologies category in 2021.
